A former U.S. Army captain from Lawton was sentenced Monday to serve 23 months in prison for conspiring to accept thousands of dollars in gratuities from contractors during his deployment to Baghdad.
Sean Patrick O'Brien, 38, of Lawton, illegally accepted about $37,500 in cash payments and jewelry for assisting Iraqi contractors in dealing with the U.S. government, according to court documents.
The gratuities were paid from mid-2008 through January 2009 and O'Brien allegedly was assisted by two co-conspirators, court documents state.
One of the alleged co-conspirators reportedly also offered O'Brien a vacation to a private island.
O'Brien was sentenced in Oklahoma City federal court by U.S. District Judge Stephen P. Friot.
In addition to the prison term, Friot ordered O'Brien to serve three years of supervised release and pay $37,500 in restitution to the U.S. government.
The sentence was announced by Oklahoma City federal prosecutor Sanford C. Coats and Acting Assistant Attorney General Mythili Raman of the Justice Department's Criminal Division.
