In an extremely rare move, The American Legion has shut down its Oklahoma headquarters because of financial losses that could be as much as $500,000 to $1 million.
Legion officials from across the country agreed Sunday night to immediately fire Frederick L. Speir, the state Legion’s chief executive officer.
Officials also agreed to relieve state Legion leaders of their duties and to freeze all the state Legion’s remaining assets.
The more than 200 Legion posts in Oklahoma remain open.
A reorganization committee was named to stabilize operations at the Oklahoma headquarters until new state leaders can be selected.
“This is really somewhat of a sad day,” said William Detweiler, a former Legion national commander.
“It is only the second time in the history of this organization,” Detweiler said.
