The family of a 35-year-old deaf and developmentally disabled man shot Tuesday by Oklahoma City police are criticizing the department, calling for an officer’s arrest and asking for independent investigations.

In a statement released Friday, the family of Magdiel Sanchez said they are devastated by the death of “a friendly and kind young man, (who) was widely loved by his family, friends and the community in which he lived.”

“It is truly unconscionable that a man in Magdiel’s condition and circumstances would be killed by the very people who the community looks to for protection, said the statement released by the family’s attorneys, Melvin C. Hall and Damario Solomon-Simmons.

The family also criticized Oklahoma City Police Chief Bill Citty, accusing him of tainting the shooting investigation by “making unfounded assertions not supported by facts.”

On Aug. 8, 2016, police shot and killed 57-year-old Darnell Wicker just moments after they arrived at his girlfriend's Louisville, Kentucky, apartment complex.

Ten days later, a North Carolina state trooper killed Daniel Harris, 29, after Harris exited his car during a traffic stop.

On Tuesday, an Oklahoma City police officer shot and killed Magdiel Sanchez, 35, outside of Sanchez's southside home.

In all three cases, the victims were either deaf or hard of hearing, highlighting a danger that advocates say is all too real in their community — contact with authorities that leads to injury or death.

“Deaf and hard of hearing individuals have always been concerned of interacting with law enforcement officers,'' said Howard Rosenblum, CEO for the National Association of the Deaf.

That's due, in part, to the failure or refusal of law enforcement agencies to train officers on how to effectively communicate with such individuals, Rosenblum said.

Sanchez was shot and killed about 8:15 p.m.
